Design technologist: the role explained, and how it differs from a design engineer

A design technologist builds working prototypes that let a team test an idea before it is built, and tools for designers. A design engineer ships the product change through a pull request.

Modeinspect

A design technologist is a designer with front-end skills, or a front-end developer with a designer's eye, who builds working prototypes and tools for designers. The prototypes let a team test an idea before engineers build it for production. The role sits between design and engineering.

A design engineer is the designer who ships. The difference between the two is where the work lands and who owns the design call. This post covers what design technologists do, who uses the title today, where it came from, and how AI is changing the job.

Key takeaways

  • Indeed Design's Eddie Lou defines design technologists as "designers with front-end development skills". At Indeed, they handed validated work to UX developers for delivery (Indeed Design).
  • In October 2026, amazon.jobs listed 14 postings with Design Technologist in the title, across Ads, Prime Video, eShop and AWS (amazon.jobs).
  • The difference from a design engineer is where the work lands. Prime Video's design technologists support partners "to help them ship faster" (amazon.jobs). A design engineer ships the change through a pull request.
  • Some 2026 roles build the system everyone else prototypes with. Atlassian's design technologists build AI into design-system scaffolding so anyone on the design team can make "realistic, on-brand, coded prototypes within minutes" (Atlassian).

What is a design technologist?

Definition

A design technologist is a designer with front-end skills, or a front-end developer with a designer's eye, who builds working prototypes and tools for designers. The prototypes let a team test an idea before engineers build it for production.

Eddie Lou's explainer at Indeed Design puts the role in one line: design technologists are "designers with front-end development skills". His team at Indeed was called Design Engineering, and its design technologists built prototypes and ran experiments.

Other sources start from the developer side. The Design Technologist Club handbook says design technologists are "quite often Front-End Developers at the core". Maria Christley, Head of Atlassian Design System, splits the difference in Atlassian's post on the role: DTs "need to think like a designer, but code like an engineer".

The same post says design technologists are "also known as Creative Technologists or Design Engineers". Adobe Design lists design technologist among the "many synonyms" for design engineer. Both are right that the titles overlap. The difference shows in where the work lands and who owns the design call.

The title means something else in architecture and construction. There, a design technologist builds tooling for BIM and CAD software such as Revit, and ICON hires under the title for that work. This post is about the software product role.

What does a design technologist do?

A design technologist builds the thing that lets a team test an idea before engineering commits to it, and the tools that make that faster. Indeed's description and current postings from Amazon and frog describe four kinds of work.

  1. Prototypes that prove a concept. Amazon's Prime Video posting is "all about proving, advancing, and evolving forward-thinking UX concepts". The team builds "high-fidelity prototypes for TV, mobile and web clients" in React.js, Redux and Motion.js, at the polished end of the prototype fidelity range. Its prototypes "are demoed to senior leadership" to show where Prime Video is heading.
  2. Design system work. At Indeed, design technologists help build the library of ready-to-use elements behind the design system. Amazon Ads hires a design technologist to "define and deliver tooling solutions for our design system to support designers and developers worldwide" (amazon.jobs). That includes web and native apps, services and plugins for Figma.
  3. Tools and infrastructure for design teams. Amazon's Creative X team wants a senior design technologist to own "systems that allow anyone to prototype within production constraints". The eShop Innovation team's Elevated Shopping Experience posting asks for "design-to-production systems that reduce manual handoffs".
  4. Translation between design and engineering. frog's posting asks its Senior Design Technologist to "Bridge the gap between creative design services, technology strategy, and software engineering." The work turns design assets into interactive prototypes, technical proofs of concept and UI layers.

Tools and design system work ship. At Amazon Ads, they go to designers and developers worldwide. The product feature a prototype explores is a different matter. At Indeed, validated work went to UX developers, who handled "fit and finish". Prime Video's team supports its design and engineering partners "to help them ship faster". The partners ship.

Who uses the design technologist title today?

Amazon uses the exact title across several teams. In October 2026, amazon.jobs listed 14 postings with Design Technologist in the title. They span Ads, Prime Video, eShop, AWS Marketing and Delivery Science and Engineering, in the US, the UK and India, including senior and manager roles.

frog, part of Capgemini Invent, uses the title too. It is hiring a Sr. Design Technologist in San Francisco.

Atlassian has design technologists on staff, as Christley's post describes. Katie Langerman, a Lead Design Technologist there, writes that part of her job is helping designers explore the more technical side of software design.

Other employers hire for similar work under other titles. Google's UX Engineer postings prefer years "as a front-end developer, UX Engineer, creative or design technologist". IDEO's Senior Software Design Lead will "build prototypes that behave like real production software" and "coach designers who prototype in code". The job description says more than the title does.

Both companies keep their openings at amazon.jobs and frog.co/careers. IDEO lists its roles on its Greenhouse job board.

Where the role comes from

The design technologist draws on two traditions: creative technology from advertising and entertainment, and prototyping inside software design teams.

Creative technology has a dated milestone. Wikipedia records that The Walt Disney Company gave a corporate title in creative technology to imagineer Bran Ferren in 1993. It describes a creative technologist as "a developer who understands the creative process and (often) the world of advertising". That tradition still shows at Amazon Ads, where Fitz Maro says design technologists "lead the technical aspects of innovative campaigns" (Amazon Ads).

The product tradition grew inside software design teams. In 2019, Indeed's Design Engineering team paired design technologists, who prototyped, with UX developers, who delivered. In 2026, Atlassian describes design technologists who build "real, interactive, data-connected prototypes that teams can touch and feel". Seven years apart, the core job is the same: a prototype that lets the team test the idea.

The glossary entry on creative technologists and the older titles covers how Mehmet Baytaş reads design engineering as a regrouping of them.

Design technologist vs design engineer

The difference is where the work lands and who owns the design call. A design technologist's prototype proves an idea, and engineers build the feature. A design engineer makes the design decision and ships it. The design engineer is defined from the design side:

A design engineer is a product designer who designs in code and ships their work to production through pull requests, instead of handing off mockups for engineers to rebuild.

Bottom row, Design engineer: Pull request, then Engineers review, then Merged, in lime, with the note "ships the change".

UX engineer is a third neighboring title. Google uses it for an engineer-first role that builds prototypes, components and tools for the design team. How UX engineers compare with design engineers covers who hires them and what they do.

For the design engineer's side, what a design engineer does all day walks through a working day. The new design ladder shows where product designers sit on the way there.

How AI is changing the role

Several 2026 roles move the design technologist's work to the systems everyone else prototypes with. At Atlassian, design technologists champion "integrating AI directly into design-system scaffolding". Christley writes that this lets anyone on the design team create "realistic, on-brand, coded prototypes within minutes".

The postings put AI into the job itself:

  • AI in the requirements. Amazon Ads' design systems posting lists "Experience building applications that integrate LLMs, AI/ML APIs, or agentic workflows" as a basic qualification. Its preferred qualifications mention AI agents and "MCP servers".
  • AI in the prototype. Prime Video's team builds prototypes on AWS Bedrock to imagine new generative AI experiences for customers. frog lists "LLM-based service integrations" among the skills it wants.
  • A higher bar than a demo. IDEO's software design posting wants prototypes "with quality that holds up beyond vibe coding".

Our read: in the Creative X and Atlassian roles, the design technologist builds the prototyping system itself. At eShop, they build the path into production. A product designer with that system, the team's real components and an agent can take a change from prototype to pull request. That designer is working as a design engineer, and the design system is where the two roles meet.

Design technologist or design engineer: which should you aim for?

Pick by what you want to hand over at the end of the week.

  • You are a product designer and want your work to ship. Aim for design engineer. The guide to becoming a design engineer walks the route from Figma to your first merged pull request.
  • You are a front-end developer or UX prototyper who loves prototypes and tools. Design technologist fits. The Amazon and frog postings ask for prototyping and front-end code.
  • You like building for other designers. Design system tooling is design technologist work, from Figma plugins to the scaffolding designers prototype on.
  • You lead a design team and are deciding who to hire. Hire a design technologist for prototypes and tooling. Grow design engineers from your product designers to ship changes. The three rungs maps that path.

How design engineer roles pay, and how to read the postings, is in the chapter on design engineer careers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a design technologist a designer or a developer?

Both, in different proportions. Indeed's Eddie Lou describes designers with front-end development skills, and the Design Technologist Club handbook describes front-end developers at the core. Prime Video's posting asks for "an available online portfolio" alongside front-end experience, so the job expects some of each.

Is a design technologist the same as a creative technologist?

The two overlap, and Atlassian treats creative technologist as another name for the role. Creative technologist grew up in advertising and entertainment. At Indeed and Atlassian, and on Amazon's Prime Video and Ads design systems teams, the role centers on product work and design systems. The glossary entry on the older titles covers creative technologists in more detail.

Do design technologists write production code?

For tools and design systems, yes. At Amazon, design technologists in Ads build and maintain design system applications and Figma plugins, and those in eShop turn experiments into tools that integrate with production platforms. The Creative X posting asks the hire to "ship production-ready code". At Indeed and on Prime Video, the customer-facing feature goes to engineers to build.

What skills does a design technologist need?

Front-end development, design sense and prototyping. The Prime Video, Creative X and frog postings ask for JavaScript and React, and Amazon Ads asks for "Proficiency with Figma and modern front-end frameworks (React, TypeScript)". Prime Video asks for "an available online portfolio". Amazon Ads also lists experience with LLMs or agentic workflows as a basic qualification.

Is a design technologist the same as a UX engineer?

Close. Google counts design technologist experience toward its UX Engineer roles. UX engineer is an engineer-first title for someone who builds for the design team, while a design technologist can start from either side. The UX engineer and design engineer comparison covers who hires UX engineers, their day and their skills.
